Maybe the trick is to have an expiration date on "zombie" threads, that is, threads that can be brought above the line by simply adding a post. Six months, maybe? Less? More?
This way recent threads can be boosted with new information, most likely from regular users (useful), but we won't have ancient stuff resurrected by somebody adding something like "You suck" or "What's the frequency?"
Of course, it will still be possible to add posts to old threads--they just won't "pop up" any more.
This might also keep us regular users from clogging the current thread section with old grudges. If someone really wants to push a favorite cause on an ancient thread, they can post a new link back to it and people can party with the zombie while still keeping him safely underground.
A small addendum: if you do have "zombie" threads, is there some way to quickly ID it for those of us who don't carefully check the dates on everything? Maybe color the text of the opening post or something. I can't be the only one who's looked at a thread and gone "what the hell?" before I figured out it was two years old.
