Only immigration stops the population shrinking. In these circumstances, it *could* be argued that I and my (late) wife performed a civic duty by producing four healthy children. (or alternatively, I have displaced four potential immigrants who are individuals with their own needs, rights, and ability to contribute)

In other countries, we would have been frowned upon.

My new wife is from China. She would have liked another child, but it was VERY heavily frowned upon.

Social engineering is always painful and messy when it gets down to individual people and their preferences and forced outcomes.

Nonetheless, the world as a whole must reach some sort of balance. Either humans will naturally limit their population, OR we will infest the globe like some plague of locusts OR there will be a population crash due to war/famine etc.

More likely, some messy combination of all of the above will occur...
