Did anyone ever make a video game out of the film 2001?
You could be a character going through various stages of
evolution just like the film.
Start off having to find and touch the Monolith just right to
receive instructions on how to use animal bones for killing both
prey and annoying neighbors. If you fail, your little tribe will
starve to death. Don't knock over the Monolith or the aliens
will leave and the human race will go extinct.
Then you have to throw the bone high enough into the air
to have it turn into a spaceship. If it doesn't reach a certain
symbolic altitude, you have to run out of the way or risk
getting hit in the head by the thrown bone.
Once in the year 2001, you can either be the Orion shuttle
pilot who has to dock with the Space Station or Heywood
Floyd. If you choose Heywood, you have to verbally navigate
several obstacles, such as making your daughter happy enough
during your telephone conversation so she doesn't cry and
not slipping up about the real reason for your trip to Clavius
Base on the Moon with the Russians. If the Russians find out
the truth about why you are going there, they will contact
their lunar base and the Russians will attempt to beat the
US Moon Bus to Tycho in order to claim TMA-1 for the People
of the Soviet Socialistic Republics and Mother Russia.
In the next level, you can either pilot the Lunar Shuttle that
lands at Clavius Base or you can go straight to the Moon Bus
heading to TMA-1. If you slipped up in your previous talk
with the Russians on the Space Station as said above, you
may either race the Russian Moon Bus to Tycho or even
engage in a laser battle with them. Since this is a secret
mission, no one will ever know about this whatever the
outcome.
Once at TMA-1, you have to touch the Monolith just right,
or it will tip over and no signal will be sent towards Jupiter
(you can convert Jupiter into Saturn if you prefer the novel
version). Or it may detonate as a countermeasure in case
the human species has been determined to be a threat to
the wider galaxy in future generations. If done correctly,
a mysterious signal will indeed be sent to Jupiter or Saturn!
The next level is the most anticipated of the game. You
can be either astronauts David Bowman or Frank Poole
aboard the USS Discovery, or you can even be one of the
three astronauts in hibernation. While granted those three
didn't get to do much in the film except lay there frozen
and then die, in this game you might actually be revived
if you play the scenario where HAL 9000 did not go berserk
and the mission made it successfully to Jupiter/Saturn.
Then we can finally see just what those mysterious three
astronauts were supposed to do once they encountered
the second Monolith (TMA-2) either in Jupiter orbit or on
the surface of Saturn's moon Iapetus.
Of course you probably want to be HAL 9000. You can
play HAL either as the neurotic version and attempt to
bump off all the human crewmembers, or you can deal
with the lies and subterfuge - showing you are indeed a
conscious being after all - and proceed with the mission
as planned. Of course you might also find a way to bump
off at least some of the humans while still trying to complete
the mission, adding to the excitement.
If you decide to be Dave Bowman and you succeed in
stopping HAL (the game features several different songs
that HAL can sing as his mind is being taken down; you
aren't stuck with "Daisy"), you can choose to either go
on with the mission or attempt to get Discovery back to
Earth.
If you choose to continue the mission, you can either send
one of the pods into the bigger Monolith to see what happens,
or you can just plunge in yourself. If you miss the Monolith,
you have only a few limited attempts to return to Discovery,
so be careful.
Once in the Monolith, you can choose a variety of cosmic
sceneries to view while plunge through this alien artificial
wormhole. You can select film or novel version modes, or
make your own cosmic journey using images taken by the
Hubble, always a public favorite.
Once you arrive at the destination set by the Monolith Aliens,
you can either choose the hotel room as seen in the film, or
decorate your own room any way you like!
During dinner, you must knock the drinking glass off the table
and make it break, or you cannot continue on to transform
into the Starchild.
When you have successfully evolved into the next stage of
human evolution, then as a reward for successfully completing
the game you can really go to town! Use your incredible new
mental powers to make all the nuclear missiles being fired at
you from Earth to detonate or even send them back at the
puny, frightened little primitive humans below you. Or decide
not to bother with one tiny planet and use your powers to
head out into the galaxy, where you can actually meet up
with the beings who made the Monolith and join them or
start your own galactic society.
Part II of the game will have you either go around the galaxy
with the Monolith Aliens helping them develop potentially
upliftable life forms, or compete for the Milky Way as you
and your newfound society battle it out with the Monolith
Aliens.
