The real first rovers on Mars
Were attached to the Soviet Mars 2 and 3 missions. They were small devices that moved
on ski-like appendages and were tethered to the landers. Sadly we never got to see them
in action, as Mars 2 crashed and the transmission from Mars 3 either stopped or was cut
off after 90 seconds.
There were plans to put a small rover on the Surveyor lunar landers, but it did not happen.
And there were plans for a large wheel robot rover named Prospector to follow Surveyor,
but it also did not achieve reality.
