The reason why asked "why?" is because, would they be better off living under a government that tells them what and how to think or a government that gives them freedom to think and want for themselves.
Of course, that's debatable no matter what government rules, but I think you know where I'm going with this: Freedom of a civilized nation/individual. Emphasis on civilized: Able to live in freedom to live, share and create among their fellow human beings (imho).
