Yes It Is

The Republican's attack is focused a great deal on the science. While they also attack the proposed solutions it's a lot easier when you deny the problem. This dishonesty infuriates me both for its impact on this issue and the way it makes everything the Republicans do suspect even when I think they are legitimately focused on the common good such as the case with the war on terror.

The article tries to paint the environmentalists as dishonest simply looking for a new means to accomplish old goals. It's hogwash. They don't want big governemnet for big government's sake and the proposed regulations are not old proposals with new justifications. They believe government can solve problems and history proves it can. Their motives in this case are totally legit while some of the proposed solutions may be misguided.

History also shows big government can cause problems which gives Republicans many examples to support their beliefs. However, denying the science in a nonscientific way (it's just computer models, and it doesn't really exist) should cause tremendous suspicion of Republican motives. I think this author is honest, but disagree with his conclusion.

My view is that private solutions are best, but any system based on greed has the potential for abuse when economic power gets too concentrated. There are also situations where there is no balance of power in reality to protect the common good. The food and drug issues prior to the FDA are a prime example. It is part of the power of Democracy for those without much economic power to wield a counter power of another form. It's another form of balance of power that keeps our system working better than any other. Those with wealth seem to frequently develop a sense of entitlement and an ends justify the means attitude. This attitude has certainly raised it's head with the tactics used to delay any action with regard to global warming and it's cause.

For those actually concerned about the environment this whole debate sounds too much like those that argued there were too many passenger pigeons, carolina parakeets, and bison for humans to ever kill off. Big government intervention saved the bison, but came too late for the others.

Mark
