Make sure the hub matches the speed of the original port
I'm running a 1.0 hub on a 2.0 port. Fortunately, most of the things on my hub aren't that speedy (my photoprinter, auxiliary hard drive, and video converter feed straight into the computers 2.0/Firewire plugs).
There are 2.0 hubs, but finding one that has the widgets on board that let it run a 1.0 peripheral while maintaining full speed on a 2.0 peripheral at the same time is turning out to be non-trivial, especially if you're looking for more than 4 ports. Fortunately, it's not a high priority.
