Creepy...but cost-effective.
A suit like that would be worth more than the soldier inside, even if you added all his training costs, etc. The GI might be expendable, but not his gear. After the recovered suit is refurbished (and cleaned up a little) it could be re-issued to another grunt!
And no need to warn the pickets about flies: the returning suit could be programmed to emit some kind of signal indicating a casualty aboard. I would suggest it could whistle a few bars of "Garry Owen".
