Who says they're aliens?
Although many are man made, we still don't know why or how the odd other ones are produced. Nor who or what does it. If they are aliens, they are fairly smart and subtle in their communications.
It could also be a star wars project. (Wouldn't it be something if Mother Earth was sentient?
Not that I think she is.....just one of a hundred explanations.)
