I don't think Korea is a good example at all to compare to the situation in Iraq. Probably a more accurate analogy would be the ill-advised US deployment in Lebanon in the 1980's, amid that country's bloody civil war. The complex, sectarian strife and religious fanaticism, the suicide bombers, etc. even some of the same regional players in that war...
At least Reagan had even sense to realize that we couldn't "fix" Lebanon and we got out before more US soldiers were killed.
It's really puzzling when supporters of the Iraq war express their fear of Iran. After all, it was Bush's invasion of Iraq that led to Iran's rise in regional power and influence. Our "allies" in the Iraqi govt are good buddies of the Iranians, and even let the Iranians broker the truce among the warring Shitte factions. Amazing...thanks to Bush's mistakes Iran has actually done more than the US to bring peace to the Shitte community in Iraq...
