Oh yes, you have recognized tactical mistakes on your side, errors like not flattening Faluja or arresting al-Sadr when we had the chance. Perhaps I should have made clear that I meant errors in strategy or philosophy or ideology. Not once have I heard the Right here say that some policy criticism from the Left might be justified. But if that is the only item in my little essay you can find such a vigorous objection to, then I think it made its point.
I can think of two other exceptions, which do support your point. Once, during a discussion about the cowardice of Jimmy Carter and the heroism of Ronald Reagan (with a third party), I pointed out that neither could be directly blamed for the military failures of the Iran hostage rescue effort or the Beirut Marine barracks bombing. And you agreed. I also recall mentioning that our failure to extract some form of vengeance for the latter has probably led to further attacks on our forces by Islamic militants, which I recall you also agreed with.
I stand by the general thought which I expressed, that the Right here, and on the national scene, is extremely loathe to admit an error or yield to criticism, and exhibits a lock-step united front on all issues.
So if I did not make myself perfectly clear, or if I overstated my case, then I sincerely apologize.
