All this does is affirm what most scientists had pretty much concluded a long time ago - that the Viking life experiment results were produced by abiotic chemistry. We still can't rule out extant microbial life deeper beneath the surface. Unfortunately, it's going to be decades before the question of life on Mars can ever be decisively and confidently answered.
