Dogs get positively fat during cicada season. They're so big and loud and dumb -- the cicadas, not the dogs -- that they practically announce "buffet" to our canine friends.
The dogs are doing their best to breed a cicada that dwells in the canopy rather than on the ground. Any cicada that spends more than a few minutes within their reach has precious little opportunity to reproduce.
