Saturday morning was typical of what I would expect for the Perseids 3 days before the estimated peak and among the light polluted city. The good fortune is no street lights in my neighborhood and the moon had set below the horizon.
A few faint short streaks with nothing to excited about. The odd thing was I didn’t see any meteors until after 5am.
Sunday morning I didn’t happen to wake up and glance at the digital clock early enough like Saturday so it was well into dawn by the time I made it outside.
Monday morning a work day, so outside at 4:30am was normal. Again, no meteors until after 5am and less of them (3 faint in 45 min). I wasn’t seeing as many as Sunday and then what you anticipate for happens. A bright long meteor streaks across the sky. It was as if Perseus hurled a flaming spear right at Orions heart.
The longest meteor I have seen in quite a while, maybe since the past storm of the Leonids a few years ago.
Well, I’ll be up for Tuesday’s meteor peak in hopes of observing more of Comet Swift-Tuttle debris tail show. You never know, that storm could occur producing some bright streaks making it all worth it.
If only I had one of those meteor observing lounges Fox and Rob linked us to. :)
