"1 million flee U.S. Gulf Coast ahead of Gustav" - where do they go?

NEW ORLEANS - "Around a million people took to Gulf Coast highways Saturday, boarding up homes and businesses and fleeing dangerous Hurricane Gustav by bus and automobile."

I realize that a lot of folk have relatives and friends with whom they can stay. Others can afford alternate housing. However, many of these people don't have any resources.

As far as transportation, I know they have free buses which go various places, and and free trains which go to Memphis. But once there, what happens? I saw one mention of "shelters" though I'm unaware of anything which could handle 500,000 people, their pets and limited belongings. I mean they have to eat, use sanitary facilities, sleep and hang out for a few days or weeks. That's a lot of eating, using sanitary facilities, sleeping and hanging out.

Anybody know?
