Contrary to what the "long-standing belief" suggests,

this has been known for a long time. All stars revolve about the Milky Way center, but there are other motions superimposed on that, at about an order of magnitude smaller. The original molecular cloud that gave birth to our sun and several hundred to several thousand siblings has long dispersed, and all the surviving stars of that cluster are probably well scattered throughout the Galaxy by now. It's unlikely any of those siblings is any closer than several thousand ly from Sol now.
