Bear in mind that Mary Ellen Emmons was the president of the Alaska Library Association, and had been the library director for years before Palin's election. She is no hack.
Speaking as a librarian, and one who has dealt with book challenges herself, I can tell you that a government official who brings up banning books as a function of office rather than through established policy and procedure, especially more than once, is not asking rhetorical questions. "Loyalty test"? Puleeze.
Censorship is censorship. Palin can try to spin it any way she wants, but this chicken has come home to roost.
