Back in the 1980's, Pakistan's president at that time,
Zia Al Haq, supported the Afghan freedom fighters
in their fight against the Soviets..
And BTW he also supported the CIA's efforts in
not only providing the Afghan Mujahadeen with
American weapons but also Saudi financing and military
volunteers, including one Osama Bin Laden.
Well?...The Pakistani President and the CIA helped The
Afghan Mujahadeen to successfully drive the Soviets
out of Afghanistan in the late 1980's.
In response, the humiliated Soviets
used its KGB to do away with Zia Al Haq, putting
a bomb on his plane, knowing that the US Ambassador
to Pakistan was also on the plane.
Both died.
The CIA and the White House knew the KGB killed both men,
but hushed it up to prevent demands for retaliation.
Another historical Cold War intrigue.

Yes, you're right! There is a previous precedent.
