There was a long period of our history, mostly prior to the 20th century, when the government would have wars or emergencies, and responded with emergency actions. Special taxes, special laws, restrictions on citizens, and things like that. When the need ended, these measures expired. Usually.
I would have fewer concerns with some of these measures now if I thought the government would walk them back when things got better. I'm afraid the government (whichever side is in charge) will decide that having it's arms elbow-deep in the financial system is a good thing, and it should stay that way.
There are people out there who get just as horny over the concept of the state running the entire mortgage industry as they do about the state running the entire health care system. I suspect some of them are getting ideas right now.
There was a time I would have said if Republicans were in charge, I wouldn't have to worry about creeping statism. Not lately.
