The secret is to own the land and the home outright and just bite the property related taxes. Then you just have to worry about the government reclaiming your land for "environmental" or "community improvement" needs at pennies on the dollar.
One might actually be safer from the government if one's property is held in trust overseas. Lord knows this ill-conceived bailout is largely to assuage large Chinese & Asian institutional investors with huge holdings in US markets.
