less demand

Everybody I know has found ways to stop using so much fuel. When the demand goes down, so does the price. I do think prices were artificially high because they could get away with it as they do every summer, this year it got high enough that it changed habits. The fuel is costing less, but people haven't gone back to their fuel gluttonous ways of a year ago like the oil companies expected.

Also the price at the pump doesn't reflect the cost it took to get it there. The price at the pump reflects the price that fuel is worth at the time of pumping.

At least those are my musings on the topic.
