Abstraction

"What if" is a necessary part of the thinking and planning process. It's why computer programs aren't very good at such things.

Almost every decision or conclusion you make contains at least one "what if." The one I made on Powell is based on long observation of his star rising and falling on the Left as he moved towards or away from the leftist party line.

Given that, it is a reasonable conclusion that if he had endorsed McCain, you would never have heard the end of it, not just here but from liberals everywhere, never mind black advocacy groups.

As for "counterfactuals," out here in the real world most questions involve a hell of a lot more than one or two premises.

"If George did not buy a Toyota, then he bought a Ford" might be a typical example given in logic texts. Of course, that conclusion does not follow from this statement alone.

However, if we know that George loves Fords, has bought Fords for the past ten years, and tells everybody at work how great Fords are, then we have a different situation, don't we?
