It worked so well!
Reading this book, several things I knew and I learned come to mind:
The Gemini 4 spacewalk wasn't planned that way until Leonov made his in march 1965. White was to only have opened the hatch and stood up. But his 21 minute long spacewalk was an enormous success with to this day, the most beautiful pictures of a spacewalker.
The Gemini 6 was planned as a rendez-vous with Agena. It failed and instead, made a rendez-vous with Gemini 7 , also with stunning pictures !
Apollo 8 was meant to perform a very high Earth orbit, instead went around the Moon and produced the Earthrise picture.
Things that didn't go as planned:
Gemini 9 was meant to realize a spacewalk with an astronaut floating around , with an AMU backpack , but tethered.
Had this been successful, the Gemini 12 astronaut would have also used the AMU but this time, UNtethered!! I wonder if Buzz Aldrin knew this, at the time. Once GT9 failed to do the first part, it became moot.
