Not a waste of time if you are willing to see it as a test of your own credulity and analytical skills, as well as to learn from the analysis and comments of others.

That's one of the great things about the web, ya' know; some really bright people not beholden to special interests are able to provide their own analysis/opinions about controversial subjects.

Of course, it's up to you which comments will carry the greater weight.

Personally, I'm always most impressed with those who can make a logical case dispassionately. Analysis involves weighing available evidence to arrive at the most likely explanation.
