I searched out other websites and found India's space agency, ISRO,
will attempt to launch an Ariane(V)/Proton-class rocket booster next year:
The GSLV Mk III.
That booster will be capable of hauling upto 10-20 metric tons into LEO.
And capable of sending 4-8 metric tons to GTO...and somewhat less to the Moon.
Such a capability will indeed give the Indians the capability of sending
a 4 metric ton, two-seater Gemini-class spacecraft on its way
to the Moon to carry out a Zond trajectory.
BTW...The Indian rocket booster used to send the Chandrayaan 1 successfully
to the moon is also capable of sending a 4 metric-ton two-seater spacecraft
into low-earth orbit....But that booster is not as massive or as powerful
as the GSLV Mk III being prepared for launch next year.
gbaikie?... I think China and India are about to embark on their own "Moon Race";
a less ambitious version of the 1960's USSR-USA affair.
