The idea that human behavior might be the result of evolutionary imperatives and cultural modifications of those imperatives devised to maintain and promote the integrity of tribal agendas, is anathema to little minds. It removes the concept of "evil" from human motives and conflict. Without evil, it becomes very difficult to morally justify conflict. With evil, or the perception of it, conflict is inevitable.
I'm not saying evil doesn't exist, it most certainly does, but it doesn't arise from "them" being evil. It comes from "us" insisting "they" must be.
Snakes are dangerous animals, they should be avoided and sometimes they must be destroyed. But they are not evil. They are just doing what snakes do. We should feel the same way about all our enemies. This not only makes moral sense, it is intensely practical. It is easier to protect oneself from snakebite if one understands their habits than if we simply assume they are out to get us at all costs.
