re: It was all Galileo's fault.

That's my spin, spin, spin on it.

I disagree, there are a multitude of approaches to rationality and scientific thought, the celestial approach (Kepler, Galileo, Newton), the thermodynamic approach (Lavoisier, Kelvin, Gibbs), the mechanical approach (Newton, Einstein) and the electrodynamical approach (Faraday, Maxwell, Einstein) and the chemical approach (Boyle, Lavoisier, Dalton), and I'm sure you can thing of others. Many of these approaches were occurring simultaneously, however astronomy had the edge because the celestial sphere was widely accessible and required very little in the way of laboratory technology, and when that technology was introduced, it turned out to be extraordinarily useful and simple.

Any way you look at it, metallurgy would have eventually produced the desired result, and certainly theology had nothing to do with it, and in almost all instances was a severe hindrance and present many obstacles to progress.

The theologists can spin it any way they want, delusions are easy to spot.
