Capitalism?
The Greeks had a strong economy built on trade. The renaissance was brought about due to trade. The explosion of science and technology of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries were a direct result of trade, free markets, and consumerism.
When there's a need for something and a chance to make a profit, people will stretch their minds to find a way to fill that need and make a profit.
