I've always thought Cuban-Americans hated Cubans.
The Cuban-American inspired boycott of Cuba didn't hurt Castro in the least and may have helped keep him in power. Cuban-Americans here had to know that.
But the boycott did hurt the average Cuban. Screwed the population over royally. And still does.
As ER pointed out the younger generation may not dislike their kinfolk so much.
