The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston and made in 1971.
A whole city to one's self, plus you get to shoot crazed hippie mutants from your fancy
loft with machine guns and drive around in a military jeep, plus you can watch Woodstock
just about any time you feel like - so long as you get back home before dark.
Then you get to meet a hip black chick and a guy who just happened to be a medical
student before the plague killed most of the world. With this great jazzy soundtrack.
And when you die, your body will be posed in a really symbolic way.
Of course I absolutely loved this film when it came out, ironically in the very same
month and year that it was broadcast on NBC and where Robert Neville (played by
Charlton Heston, no less) saw a calendar with the very same month and year in a
car dealership he was perusing for some new wheels. I always had to wonder if
it was done on purpose by the network or just an amazing coincidence?
Oh yes, it was March of 1975.
Matthias: One creature, caught. Caught in a place he cannot stir from in the dark, alone, outnumbered hundreds to one, nothing to live for but his memories, nothing to live with but his gadgets, his cars, his guns, gimmicks... and yet the whole family can't bring him down from that, that...
Zachary: Honky paradise, brother?
Matthias: Forget the old ways, brother, all the old hatreds.
That was my biggest disappointment with I Am Legend: The mutants in that film were
basically animals with no good dialogue except screaming. At least the ones in TOM
could argue their point, warped as it was. More proof that a bigger budget and better
special effects do not always mean a better written script.
