I have been looking at the situation off and on for a while.
I've recorded some of the one month duration magnitudes.
The maximum number of above magnitude 4 events occurred between May 5 and June 4 this year, the number was 431. Sixteen of them were above magnitude 6.

Maximum number above magnitude 6 was between April 7 and May 8, the number was 19.

What I seem to be detecting is not the increasing in the number of earthquakes but the increase in their intensity, in other words there may be lower number of earthquakes but there are more of the more intense ones, like above magnitude 7.
