I went over this a while back, showing how the regulations died in committee and who killed them. Any attack on the system or tightening of rules was considered an attack on home ownership for the poor and minorities, and a flying wedge of Democrats, usually the same ones, would leap to the defense.
The Democrats are trying to scrub all traces of themselves off this crisis in the same way they scrubbed all traces of pre-2000 Democratic policies on Saddam and Iraq off of that issue.
