Its a Zen thing. If the election is fair, and I have no doubt it will be overall, then the winner will be the result of the electoral process we have agreed to constitutionally. Even if the electoral and popular votes differ, those are the rules we all agreed to follow, and we are obligated to accept the result. I believe the election will be a close one, and that the divisions in our society will not go away after it is over. So be it.
Personally, I find Trump offensive, and the political philosophy his party represents fascistic. He, and it, are intellectually bankrupt, morally empty and spiritually desolate. Trump and his partisans appeal to everything that is foul and toxic in the American psyche, indeed, they exploit it joyfully. He is the candidate of the politics of fear, anger, ignorance, hatred, self-righteousness, bigotry and greed. I feel very strongly about this, but I do not think that gives me the right to subvert the result should it go against me. Alas, I don't think the other side feels the same way. We have differences in kind, not merely of degree.
But I am a Democrat, and we live in a democracy. We are committed to accepting the will of the people. We have no guarantee the people will be right, but we have no right to claim we as individuals are any wiser than they are collectively. And we certainly have no right to impose our will on the majority, no matter how misled, mistaken or malicious they may be. At least we can say that this time we have been given a true choice. Tuesday we will get to pick what kind of country we will live in. History alone will tell us who was right.
