Despite pressure, Thomas or Alito have thus far given indications they won't resign before the new Congress takes over in January. Such a nakedly political move would only make the SCOTUS lose even more credibility. Not that THAT would stop Trump or the GOP from trying it if they can.

But assuming no last minute flim flam by the outgoing Senate, one thing should be 100% guaranteed: Any SCOTUS vacancy before January 2029 will NOT be replaced by the new Senate. I have been pissed off for a decade+ about how Obama's pick was stolen by those bastards. Turnabout would be fair play and poetic justice on the Orange Criminal POFS.
