I'm with you.
I am a Christian and none of these people bear any resemblance to what a Christian is or should be. You don't have to be a Christian to be compassionate. In fact, I've known a lot of atheists and agnostics who were more compassionate than Christians, a lot of whom favor Capital Punishment. I've never figured that one out.
