"Go out and shop."
Cleaning up after that shallow, silly and even stupid president and his party is really a touch and go situation. Conservatives are proposing the very policies which created this depression as the cure. And trying to block that which may have a slim chance to work. Imagine that.
For a President to be honest with the American people is, I'll grant, a novelty. However, if only one thing comes out of this economic crisis it is this: The American consumer society is dead. We can no longer afford to buy more than we can pay for, we can no longer assume our children will live as well as we (we can guarantee that own't happen, as a matter of fact) and we will need to learn to live less material lives. Within our limited means. Even our advertising is designed to keep us unhappy with what we have.
The giant ego trip is over. Globalization has won, the middle class is history, and the country will be bankrupt before it's all over.
"Go shop" my aching ass. Without a job, with savings evaporated, our biggest asset depreciating in value to less than we owe, and Conservatives don't want the American people to know the truth. They want to cut taxes even further for the super-wealthy.
Some things never change.
