The Effect of the Moon Was Huge.

Consider that the Moon was about 1/6 as far away from the Earth at the beginning as it is now. Since tidal gradients vary with the inverse THIRD power, that means that the tides were 63 = 216 times as high as they are today. Figure today, tides average a couple of meters; 2 * 216 meters = 432 meters, far taller than the Empire State Building. This means a perpetual tsunami washing over the low continents more than twice per day.
