Laptop: keep it alive

You didn't specify, but it seems likely that your current laptop with failed DVD writer would/could be networked with your Dell server. If you have a DVD writer on another network machine, then DVD writer replacement on the Toshiba laptop would not be a high-priority item, at least in my world, but see below.

Beyond that, your option 2) seems like a good plan, but option 3) does not. Rationale: any working computer can be put to good use for some task, especially if on a network.

If you need the laptop with DVD writer in remote locations (where not networked), then options 1) or 2) both have merit, depending on the age and likely service life of the laptop in question. Personally, I would opt for choice 2), for the reason you gave.

One final thought: prices on USB memory sticks have dropped like the proverbial rock recently. I saw a 16GB stick at Office Max recently for less than $30, IMS.

Good luck,
