re: Old planes

I had an Uncle was in the Battle of the Bulge. He never talked about it. He did tell a joke about being in England and how amazed they were at US insignia, that they didn't use insignia like we did. His insignia was a flag a Lion and a II (if I remember correctly now). He explained to the man that the flag represented the US, the Lion reperesented Britain and the II meant that this was the 2nd time we'd had to come over there and pull their asses out from under someone! (no offense to our British friends--it was the humor of the time).

A lot of the WWII guys left home in '42 and didn't come back until '45 or '46 (if they came back). I never met one who wanted to talk about it except one guy I met quite a few years ago who enlisted when he was 14 (lied about his age) and served in WWII, Korea, and VietNam. He had done them all and we talked for a couple of hours about how war had changed and what it was like in each. He stayed in because it was all he'd ever known.
