I taught skiing for two years. I've never had a student that came close to injuring themselves- except for the kid that fell off the chair lift but that was unrelated. And I've never seriously been injured myself and I'm not unfamiliar with double diamond runs.
Properly adjusted, your skis and bindings will not break your leg. I don't know how Pod managed to break ribs on his pole- they're made of some pretty soft aluminum these days. (Maybe he needs a calcium supplement or- increase his mass ;))
