I am split on this issue. The Conservative in me is terrified of the aspect of the US getting rid of this powerful deterrent.

The Pacifist in me welcomes it.

My compromise. My Conservative side will only accept it if we have a defense against a nuclear attack. Here is what I am worried about;

Say a country doesn’t want to get rid of their nukes, or they decide to build more. One day they are sick of America and launch them all at, because what are we going to do. We have gotten rid of our nukes. They wipe us out in a first strike then we are history. So we need something that will shoot down nuclear rockets heading our way. The laser thing looks promising, but it is far from perfected(From what the military has shown us). Perhaps a robust patriot missile program?

So before we get rid of such a powerful deterrent, we better have the means to defend ourselves, because you can bet someone will be keeping their fingers crossed when they promise to get ride of/not make any new nukes.
