A couple of years ago pirates attacted a small cruse ship operated by Seabourne in this same area. As I recall, they blew up a cabin with a RPG. The captain of the crusie ship turned away from the coast at top speed hoping to exceed the fuel range of the small boats. In addition, the crusie ship reported used an accoustic weapon on the attacking boats.

And of course, there was the Achilli Lauro.
