Current Events » in reply to There was a time when the idea the Soviet Union might collapse was inconceivable.

Interestingly, a British general officer wrote a book in 1978 re WWIII predicting that breakup.

"In 1978, General Sir John Hackett (a retired, although he never liked the word, Australian-born British general who led a brigade at Arnhem) and a bunch of other high-ranking ex-military and diplomatic people, some contributing anonymously wrote a book on a possible World War Three, The Third World War: August 1985."

I remember reading this book which dealt with an errant nuclear-armed missile. The ultimate result was a stalemate but the Soviet Union broke up along historical ethnic lines.

Which is what happened. Ronald Reagan had as much to do with it as he did with the price of pepper in 1728 in London, but what the hell.
