This will sound callous...
...but I kind of enjoy them. They are exciting. Like watching an electrical storm. I've heard somewhere that there is a characteristic sound they make, and I've always tried to concentrate on hearing what there is to be heard. But there's so much going on that it's hard to concentrate. Also, the nearby sounds that the building I'm in (cracking and creaking sounds usually) grab my attention. And when they are over you get an immense WHEW! feeling, when it's clear that it wasn't "the big one". (Until it is "the big one" and then it will really suck!)
