If you've ever experienced an 8+ magnitude earthquake like the Tokachi Okii, you'll know how it turns your world upside down for awhile.
The same-day 7.8 magnitude aftershock was somehow even more frightening because we all suspected it was coming. There's nothing like expectation of disaster to put one on edge.
After the Big One that morning, our day was rattled with several powerful aftershocks of about 6 magnitude. My elderly Japanese neighbors regaled us with tales of a killer from the 1920s, my girlfriend translating for me between sobs how it was the aftershock 8 hours later that had dealt the most deadly blow, so we were all just completely on edge and in shock ourselves when our world started shaking again.
1968 Tokachi Okii
I've experienced a number of smaller quakes in California, but nothing like 1968's Big Shaky. That said, anything over about a 5.5 is terrifying.
Nature is so power, ful and we are so puny.
