I haven't installed IE8 to avoid losing IE7--I need to test my work against the browser the majority of people use, so I always hold back until a new version reaches critical mass. Probably the "luck" is due to designing to work with FireFox too, which means tighter conformance to standards; IE is perpetually catching up to FF in that regard, so I let FF chart my path.
What makes my life tough these days isn't so much browser incompatibility on the PC anymore, it's the rise of small-screen devices like the iPhone and Blackberry. The iPhone might have a version of the Safari browser on it, but it's crippled to protect Apple's iPhone Store monopoly on apps (no Flash support is the main crime against humanity); and no matter what the browser, it's the matchbook-size screen that's the big challenge. The more things change, etc....
