That's the point made most recently by Olympia Snowe of Maine. Reagan didn't chase the moderate, pro-choice Republicans out of the party.
Reagan also had the good fortune (for the GOP) to lead Republicans to victory in 1980 and 1984 in a country that was much more solidly white and male-dominated. The demographics have changed considerably in the past 25 years, and will continue to evolve. If the election of 1980 had taken place with the demographic breakdown of 2008, the Reagan landslide over Carter would have in fact have been a dead heat. That fact should scare the hell out of the Republicans, and get them to think more seriously about reaching out beyond their base.
The GOP is really good at looking back - not so hot at looking forward.
