in an administrative position and was an atheist for most of that. For the most part I was immune from the fact that the letter "C" in the name stands for Christian. Our facility was mostly about recreation, fitness, education, and family activities and my boss, who was quite the father figure to me, didn't really push the religious part.
However, when we'd have board meetings, invariably someone would start the damn thing out with a prayer and there seemed to be this randomness as to who was picked to deliver it. One day all eyes fell on me and the board president asked if I'd like to deliver the invocation. My boss, who knew I was a non-believer, jumped in and rescued me. It was a very "Christian" thing for him to do. I'm not sure what I would have said. I was very capable of playing a role but I'm sure my heart would not have been in it. I could easily have made it an issue and things would have gotten very tense. I'm glad I didn't have to decide.
