I'd imagine that my experience is typical, that having seen Nazi Germany depicted mostly in black and white photographs all my life, inevitably I was subliminally influenced to think of those events as ancient, disconnected from me, and probably not relevant to the modern world.
In color, it hits me like a ton o'bricks that this happened during my parents' lifetime, that Germany was a modern industrial democracy and that Germans were a modern sophisticated people not so different from Americans. I see throngs of patriots in front of marble buildings, and minus the swastika banners, how is the scene all that different from an American inauguration, or any demonstration of civic pride?
It could've been us. Without eternal vigilance, it might still be us some day.
Thanks Art. Excellent find.
