All they'll accomplish in the end is alienating everybody and pulling down the Republican Party even faster.
The majority of the American people fully understand how irrational, mean-spirited, and totally unfair these attacks on Sonia Sotomayor really are. Un-American? Are you serious? Puerto Ricans are of course American by birth, and she was born and raised in the Bronx, NYC, and by all acounts her life story has been the epitome of the American dream! Now most Americans are fair and decent people, and most have Puerto Rican or other Hispanic friends or acquintances, or even family, and most see the understandable great pride felt by them in Sotomayor's historic nomination. And then most Americans hear Newt's and Rush's inane attacks on her and wonder, "What the hell's wrong with those people? Why are they being so mean?" And then the Republicans wonder why their party continues to lose supporters and shrink smaller and smaller...
It's really sad that Newt Gingrinch and his ilk are so uncomfortable and unaccepting of the prospect of one - just one - independant minded Hispana woman sitting on the bench next to so many other white males, who are after all still dominant and are still calling the shots.
Just one question for Newt - if Sotomayor had happened to be a white, anglo progressive thinker instead of Hispana, on what grounds would they be attacking her? On her legal case history, or would they be still be calling her "Un-American"? I sincerely doubt the latter.
